Proserpine and Surrounding Area
Proserpine is known as ‘barra country’, and it is here that the avid fishermen come to catch the prized barramundi. If fishing’s not your cup of tea, why not book a horseback ride through the stunning rainforest, and catch more than a glimpse of the local native flora and fauna. Try to book around the time of the Proserpine show, or the markets (held once a month). The town is based around the sugar mill, with sugar cane farming being the major industry. Two large golf courses are a must-visit for the golfing fanatic.
With over 160 different islands, including Hamilton, Hayman, Daydream, Brampton, and Lindeman, the Whitsundays is the perfect place to sit and do nothing, take it all in, or knock yourself out with a huge selection of sporting and recreational activities. Book a yacht (sail it yourself, or book a crew to look after you) and fish, sunbathe or go scuba diving to watch the underwater life. Skydive, kayak, 4WD through the forest, take an adventure flight, parasail, catamaran, play lawn bowls or go bushwalking to fill in the time, and spend the nights dining at restaurants serving some of the freshest food you’ll ever try. Did we mention the resorts? Perfectly catering to your every whim, you can truly have the holiday you’ve been dreaming of.
Airlie Beach is where the country’s first ever Hog’s Breath Café opened, so why not pop in and have a meal. The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef, can be seen from space (the only living thing that can boast that) and is larger than the Great Wall of China, and should be seen close-up in a glass-bottomed boat or while snorkelling. The reef offers its own islands, among them Great Keppel and Dunk.
