You don't have to if time doesn't permit, but you can arrange a stopover for a day's sightseeing, a week sunbathing or longer in destinations such as Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Osaka, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta or even the tropical island of Bali in Indonesia.
- The more stopovers you have en-route the more taxes, surcharges and fees you will pay. For example, a cheap flight to Australia that flies London - Frankfurt - Bangkok - Jakarta - Sydney, may start off with the cheapest price but by the time all the taxes and fees are added, it may be comparable in cost to a flight that goes London - Singapore - Sydney. Bare in mind, your total travel time will also be longer.
- Arrive early at check in and you might snag a more comfortable seat with more leg room! You never know, you can sometimes be (and it is rare) upgraded to economy premium or even business. Other times flights get overbooked and as a result you may get bumped onto the flight with an upgrade.
